Celebrating 10 Years as The Teaching!

It’s hard to believe, but it’s been nearly 10 years to the day that our first performance as The Teaching occurred at Seamonster Lounge. To mark this monumental occasion we decided what better way to celebrate together than at the very spot where it all started! We’re proud that the Seamonster Lounge has been at the heart of the local live music scene all these years. They recently doubled in size with their beautiful renovation and added a great new concert stage in their room. It’s amazing both the band and venue we made our debut at is still rocking 10 years down the road with everything we’ve experienced.

Without a doubt this is going to be a very special night of music for us and we’d love for you to be there to join in party. It’s been an absolute privilege to make music and bring the community together through our weekly jams at The Hang at Lo-Fi Performance Gallery & LUCID over 4+ years, receiving wonderful opportunities backing incredible talent on stage and in the studio, and playing countless memorable shows in Seattle over the years…here’s to the next 10!!!

See you Saturday, Sept. 10th for a hard-hitting soul-swinging Teaching like you’ve grown to know and love!

Feature Article on Denver’s Hey Reverb

We just received some fantastic press online by Sam DeLeo with ‘Hey Reverb‘ about our recent experience at the GRAMMY Awards and highlighting our upcoming show in Denver tonight at Dazzle. Thanks Sam!

Denver’s Jeremy Jones of the Teaching on Grammy nominations with Macklemore

The Teaching releases its fourth album at Dazzle Jazz on June 23.

You never know who you’re going to meet at a jam session. Since the cutting contests of stride piano players in the homes and speakeasies of 1920s Harlem, jams have been an important part of the jazz music world. They offer opportunities for the birth of new bands and combinations, and for the uninitiated to play and learn, especially if the jam is hosted by a band like The Teaching. The Teaching’s four-year, open-stage jam in Seattle was called The Hang. From beginners to seasoned stars on tour like Roy Hargrove and Robert Glasper, musicians knew The Hang was the place to be in Seattle on Thursdays.

“One of the musicians that played with us several times at The Hang was trumpeter Owuor Arunga,” said The Teaching’s drummer Jeremy Jones. “He’d been performing with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis since their inception, and when they were looking to capture a jazz trio sound for a track (“BomBom”), Owuor recommended us. We were contacted by their manager and set up a studio session.”

As proof that jam sessions can lead to much more than musical noodling, the members of The Teaching were nominated for a Grammy earlier this year for their work with Macklemore and Ryan Lewis on the Grammy-winning album, “The Heist”. Since forming The Teaching in 2006, Jones, keyboardist Josh Rawlings and bassist Evan Flory-Barnes have been producing hard-swinging jazz, boom-bap hip hop and soulful chord progressions. We spoke with Jones in advance of the CD release of their fourth album, “Birds In Flight”, tonight at Dazzle Jazz.

Since you were primarily jazz guys toiling in the shadows, what was your reaction to news of your Grammy nomination, and did you make musical connections there?

It was truly a “wow” moment. It became more immediate when we received individual letters from the Recording Academy inviting us to walk the red carpet and sit on the floor with the rest of the nominees at the live telecast in L.A. And meeting the other people who were on the album was great. We’re all from Seattle and all of us were happy for the recognition.

Though you’re based in Seattle, your label Dazzle Jazz is in Denver, where (tonight) you’re also releasing your new album, “Birds In Flight”. What other Seatte-Denver connections exist for the band (and please don’t mention the Super Bowl)?

I grew up in Arvada and graduated from Pomona High School. Ever since I left for college at Duke University , I’ve been doing concerts whenever I come back to town. So, when The Teaching formed in Seattle in 2006, it wasn’t long before we started coming back together as a group to perform at Dazzle and other places in Denver. My bandmates Josh and Evan quickly fell in love with the sunshine, beautiful scenery and appreciative audiences in Colorado. We even wrote a song called “Colorado”, which appears on our album “Live at The Triple Door”, which captures the feeling of our trips here. (That recording features Arvada-based saxophonist Serafin Sanchez, who also attended Pomona High.) And I won’t mention anything about the Super Bowl except to say I was at the game in New York!

People view you as jazz players but your music spans R&B, soul, hip hop, fusion, drum n’ bass and Afro-Cuban. How was that mix forged?

When Josh, Evan, and I started playing together, we found many overlapping musical mechanisms – one (was) starting a song with a boom-bap hip-hop groove and building up to a point where the energy explodes into a high-energy swing feel, then comes back to a hip-hop feel seamlessly. Another mechanism we all liked was to take a basic two- or four-bar chord change with a simple simple melody over it, and repeating that over and over with little deviation. Rather than using sheet music with set roadmaps for our compositions, we built our songbook using simple seed ideas that sprouted in new directions each time we performed, and over time became refined into cohesive songs.

What can people expect from the new album?

One new aspect is the expanded use of lead vocals by Josh, as well as three-part harmonies by all of us.

Do you see yourselves continuing to collaborate with a variety of artists, like Macklemore & Lewis, while still producing your original music? Is that a kind of best of both worlds scenario?

Absolutely. Collaboration has been our calling card as a group. Josh was in Germany this weekend performing with Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, and will be fresh off that trip when we play at Dazzle (tonight). Every time we collaborate with another artist, we increase our reach and chance of uplifting fellow souls with the power of music. And we also realize now that, we didn’t sneak in to the Grammys. We got invited. It’s a natural progression of hard work. When we were posting photos from backstage at The Grammys on social media, we felt this love and appreciation from our friends and fans. I was texting friends I went to Duke with and one said, “Remember when you used to practice all night and not get home till 2 a.m. Well, now you’re at The Grammys.”

Birds In Flight CD Release Recap

The Teaching at Triple Door by Shasta Bree Photography

Last Sunday, May 4th The Teaching released our 4th full-length CD to a Sold-Out room of excited listeners at Triple Door in Seattle, WA. The evening was truly a memorable & heart-connecting night that we’ll never forget. We thank all of you who were able to come out and celebrate so many incredible moments including our GRAMMY Nomination in January, the release of our newest Live Album ‘Birds In Flight’, and of course the recent arrival of Josh’s daughter Freja (who was also in attendance with the Rawlings Family that evening). To say we were overflowing with joy would be an understatement – we were in total bliss giving hugs and just connecting with so many lovely people with our music that night!

Many of The Teaching’s fans also commented on how much they enjoyed the opening set by visual musician Jessie Sawyers. She tapped, clapped, rocked out on her Ukelele, and had the audience clapping and singing along as well. Jessie truly did a remarkable job warming up the stage that night and we even had a blast getting a chance to jam with her at the very end of the night on Evan’s signature tune ‘Apex of a Beautiful Day‘ (video of that performance highlight coming soon).

With the help of dear friends and supporters the night was a complete Sell-Out with nearly 300 people there and the entire performance went off without a hitch. We’re also happy to share that we had professional video and photography documenting the entire performance that evening. We look forward to releasing high-quality video footage from the show and below is a handful of excellent photos from the night.

‘Birds In Flight’ CD Release at Triple Door Mainstage

May 4th, 2014 The Teaching CD Release at Triple Door poster

The Teaching is absolutely thrilled to announce our upcoming show at Triple Door Mainstage this coming Sunday, May 4th, 2014 at 6:30pm. This show marks not only our first show as a group in over a year, but also a sort of post-GRAMMY® Celebration / ‘Birds In Flight‘ CD Release concert all wrapped up into one mega awesome show! We’re also so glad our fellow musician, tap-dancer extraordinaire and dear friend Jessie Sawyers will be joining us as our special opener for the evening. This show is going to be something truly special and we want you there to be a part of it.

About Jessie Sawyers:

Jessie Sawyers Photo 3

Jessie is a visual musician, educator, leader, and force of positivity. Her life’s work involves the practice of living from a space of love, kindness, and gratitude.  Her personal struggles, including over 23 surgeries as a child, have taught her what a gift it is to be alive, and she is committed to uplifting others through her creative pursuits.  Her first love is tap dance, which she began at the age of 11 under the guidance of Ginger Roberts, Cheryl Johnson, and Anthony Peters in Seattle, as well as at festivals with the late tap greats Cholly Atkins, Harold Cromer, Gregory Hines, Fayard Nicholas, LaVaughn Robinson, Jimmy Slyde, and Prince Spencer.

As a performer, Jessie has been working professionally for 15 years, the first seven of which were filled with commercials and appearances as the Seattle seafood chain Ivar’s tap dancing clam mascot.  While she is based out of Seattle, tap has taken her around the country and internationally to Vancouver, Toronto, Greece, London, and soon-to-be 13 new countries this fall during her Visual Music World Tour.  Jessie has had the pleasure of working with Savion Glover, Mark Mendonca, Travis Knights, Seattle-based band The Teaching, and as an assistant to Dianne Walker.  Over the years, Jessie’s pursuits have expanded to include singing, playing the ukulele, illustrating, and motivational writings.

About Bird’s In Flight:

Birds In Flight Bird Artwork by Matt HebermehlThis album will be our 4th Physical Release and our 3rd Live Album. It was recorded live at the Triple Door during our performance at the 2010 Earshot Jazz Festival and contains music inspired from our time hosting ‘The Hang’ jam session in Seattle, as well as the artwork and personal time spent with our dear friend Matt Hebermehl. The album artwork over the past 3 albums and this forthcoming CD contain the original work by artist Matt Hebermehl and this album was specifically titled with inspiration from his recent Art Installation at the Jepson Center for the Arts in Savannah, GA. His art is a unique blend of Street Graffiti styling’s and Tribal Art like influences. The installation of ‘Birds In Flight’ had a very beautiful youthful & joyful quality to it that resonated with us and inspired some great music and experiences during our visit to Savannah. Matt’s artwork is for sale and he may be in attendance for our performance on May 4th.Birds In Flight Circle Artwork by Matt Hebermehl

About The Performance on May 4th:

As mentioned above this performance marks a celebration of a lot of things, but most importantly this show is about bringing together the wonderful friends, family & fans that have supported us throughout our 7 years as a group, which undoubtedly set us on the course that led us to the GRAMMY® Awards this past January. Certainly, our hard work as musicians and efforts to create a powerful interconnectedness in the Seattle Artistic Community via ‘The Hang’ had a large impact as well, but it takes an army – a community – a synergy. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis wouldn’t have been able to reach the level they have if our beloved community didn’t help support. So, this night is as much a way to say THANK YOU for all the years of love and support to get us to where we’ve been and where we are now. We’re so proud to bear the “Grammy Nominee” title next to our name now and to have contributed to this multi-GRAMMY® winning album that Seattle can claim along with the Super Bowl Title. It’s been quite a start to 2014 and we’re not done yet! We look forward to seeing you on May 4th at the Triple Door!
